A Giant Raspberry Cake on Dan Can Bake It!

February 5, 2019 by Dan 3 Comments

This weeks challenge from Food Network was to create an epic cake inspired by Flavortown! That means Guys Grocery Games, the hit show hosted by Guy Fieri. You probably know that giant food cakes are kind of my jam, so when I got this challenge I RAN with it. Turns out that raspberries are Guy’s favorite fruit and I love them too!!!

The velvet chocolate spray is one of my favorite effects to use on cakes. I used the technique on the Moana inspired cake that I created in season one of Dan Can Bake It. All that you need is a paint sprayer (a brand new one that you ONLY use for pastry,) and some chocolate spray mix.

Chocolate Spray Recipe

3 parts melted colored candy melts

1 part melted vegetable shortening

Stir the chocolate and shortening together until combined. Pour into a paint spray gun and spray onto a cake that is semi frozen/frozen.

I love the raspberry buttercream idea! My daughter is having a 30th Fiesta Birthday party and would like me to make her a Chocolate Raspberry Chili Pepper cake. I have watched your wonderful video on making a Chili Pepper cake. I am going to use your Devils Food cake recipe and think the Raspberry Buttercream icing would be great to use between the layers. Do you have a recipe to share for the Raspberry Buttercream icing? Also, if I bake the cakes on 2 half sheet trays, how long do I bake them?

Hello! I think raspberry with devils food is a great choice!!! You can use my strawberry swiss buttercream strawberry swiss buttercream and replace raspberries for strawberries. For the devils food cake in a standard half sheet pan I would start checking for doneness around the 18-20 minute mark. Make sure to line the bottom of the sheet pan with parchment and Chill the half sheets or even freeze them before using for easier handling.

Thank you for the fast reply and added information! I am going to do a trial run making the cake this weekend. I am a novice and have never done a cake with fondant before, but am excited to try!
